This series of volumes Documents and Studies on 19th c. Monetary History aims to republish the main documents related to the question of bimetallism at the end of the 19th century. The series will include several sub-series devoted to the International Monetary Conferences held in various capitals during the second half of the century and to the specific situation of different countries (i.e. India, Japan, United States of America, China, etc.), since the question of monetary systems was a global question. It will also include specific studies on monetary questions and on monetary history.

The scientific community will thus have access to the enormous collection of statistics, analyses, and discussions, on and around the question of gold and silver coinages. These documents will be useful to specialists of the 19th century but also to all specialists of monetary history and in particular to those studying the question of the ratio between gold and silver and the question of gold or silver standard, which are common to all periods.

The Enquête sur les principes et les faits généraux qui régissent la circulation monétaire et fiduciaire, took place from 1865 to 1868, and was published in 1867-1869 in 6 volumes (I, II and III Dépositions, IV Délibérations des Chambres de Commerce, etc., V Dépositions écrites françaises et étrangères, VI Rapport). It gives a complete view on the monetary question in Europe, with a large number of tables and statistics.

The Délibérations were organized with a questionnaire of 42 questions. The discussions present a complete analysis of the economic situation and coin circulation in Europe. All the discussions and documents were published in detail, in French.

The volume I includes the first 12 proceedings including 36 hearings (MM. Bagehot, Bonnet, Cernuschi, le Baron de Rothschild, Vitu, many members of the Parliament and bankers).

The volume II (Moneta 134) includes 10 proceedings including 36 hearings (MM. Ducuing, Mallet, De Waru, Wolowski, members of the Parliament and directors of the Banque de France or other banks).

The volume III (Moneta 135) includes 7 proceedings including 16 hearings, mainly bankers and directors of the Banque de France (MM. Andouillé, Doyen, Gouin, Rouland…), and members of the Parliament (including M. Thiers).

Volumes IV, V and VI will be published soon.
