(6thcentury BC – 15th century AD)

Medea Tsotselia

Minting of coins and money circulation started on the territory of Georgia in the 6th c. BC. The numismatic history of the country presents coins of different types which reflect the political and cultural-economic influences to which Georgia was subjected during different periods of time.

Several important archaeological sites were excavated during the last years of the 20th c., which revealed numerous numismatic material. Funds of Georgian museums were enlarged recently by coins found during agricultural field works and by means of donations.

This volume describes 1453 coin finds. The book is provided with maps on which geographical distribution of coin finds is given according to different epochs.

Dr. Medea Tsotselia, senior researcher, works at the Numismatic Department of the Georgian National Museum in Tbilisi.
